Discover the Magical Berry of the Amazon: Acai

History of Acai – The Beauty Berry

Acai (ah-sigh-EE) berries are a grape-like fruit native to the rainforests of South America.  The fruits are a deep purple color, about 1 to 2 centimeters (cm) in diameter and are harvested from acai palm trees.  They have an earthy taste that’s often described as a cross between blackberries and unsweetened chocolate.  Although the berry has been around for thousands of years, it was not introduced to the western world until the 1990’s.

Acai was first used by the tribes of the Amazon jungle as a cure for various ailments. It is estimated that the indigenous tribes people routinely use up to 2,000 of the 3,000 known rainforest fruits for medicinal purposes. The acai berry was discovered to have natural antioxidant properties with benefits ranging from improved skin appearance to weight loss.

5 Impressive Reasons You Need Acai Berries

1. They’re Nutrient-Dense

Acai berries have a unique nutritional profile for a fruit, as they’re somewhat high in healthy fats, low in sugar, and contain some other trace minerals, including chromium, zinc, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus.  But some of acai’s most powerful health benefits come from plant compounds.  The most notable one among these is anthocyanins, which give acai berries their deep purple color and act as antioxidants in the body.

2. They’re Loaded With Antioxidants

Antioxidants are important because they neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals throughout the body.  Oxidative damage is one of the key causes of accelerated skin aging.  Acai berries have an incredibly high amount of antioxidants, edging out other antioxidant-rich fruits like blueberries and cranberries.  The antioxidant content of foods is typically measured by an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) score.  Acai pulp has an ORAC of 15,405, whereas the same amount of blueberries has a score of 4,669.

3. They’re Good For Your Skin

Your skin is a battlefield, in which your cells are constantly fighting for you against environmental pollutants, toxins, radiation, stress, and bacteria. Antioxidants stop this damaging domino effect by neutralizing free radicals and restoring your body to a healthy balance. Acai berries also boast powerful anti-aging vitamin A to boost skin cell turnover and brightening vitamin C to rev up collagen production for a firm, glowing complexion.  For millennia, people have used antioxidant-rich foods and herbal treatments, including acai, both topically and internally to prevent skin degradation and keep skin resilient and healthy looking. In people who develop high levels of oxidative stress, their skin is often one of the first things to show this. Dark spots, wrinkles, fine lines, sagginess and discoloration are all tied to free radical damage within the skin. Many people also use acai berry to get rid of scars, stretch marks, crow’s feet and dry skin. Consuming plenty of acai helps the body repair damaged skin cells faster and, therefore, a more youthful appearance is maintained.

4. It Helps Control Your Appetite & Boost Weight Loss

Research shows that the acai berry has appetite-suppressing benefits by influencing hormones that control blood sugar levels and feelings of hunger, fullness and satiety.  Additionally, the acai berry helps boost proper digestion and control the amount of insulin in the blood, which is a direct way to help stay at a healthy body weight.

5. Celebrities Can’t Get Enough

Reduces UV-induced skin damage from Blood Orange Extract!

The area surrounding the Mount Etna Volcano in Sicily is a native growing region for three varieties of blood orange: Moro, Tarocco and the more popular Sanguinello.  The extreme climate fluctuations in the area increase the natural production of protective antioxidant compounds in blood oranges.  These compounds include anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavanones and vitamin C which can help protect skin damage caused by excessive sun exposure.  Clinical studies on a specific combination of red orange extract has shown amazing protective properties for photoaging and skin health.
