Heidi’s Fitness Journey

So how did I get here?  My health and wellness journey really started a little over three years ago. Good intentions and lots of talk about doing something about the unhealthy me started seven years ago.  Yep, that’s correct, four years of making lots of excuses of why I couldn’t…any excuse I could possibly think of, I used it.   The unhealthy me would drink seven to eight 20oz. diet sodas a day, smoked cigarettes daily, and ate like crap.

Who am I?

Heidi's Fitness journey 1My name is Heidi. I’m a single mom who works full time for Vitamin World as a District Manager; I’m also a certified nutritional coach through International Sports Science Association.  I’m tough, funny, and I’m deathly afraid of spiders.  I love to snuggle on a rainy day with my daughter; I love naps. I have a passion for helping others.

So what was it that made me commit to the journey?  Good question. Well, a recent divorce, I was a forty-year-old single mom who wanted to feel pretty again; I was stressed, I was tired, I wanted to be a healthier me for my daughter. Add to that the fact that I work for a health and wellness company, for goodness sake.

How did I begin? In steps and stages.

Step One – All In!

The journey over the last three years has had its ups and downs. The first step was really being committed to the fact that I was going to take action and do something. Every day, I committed myself to being a better me.

Every day, I committed to be better than I was yesterday. NO MORE EXCUSES!

So, on March 30, 2013, I started attending a local outdoor fitness boot camp. I was so terrified that I would be the fattest, most out of shape person there. I remember taking five-pound dumbbells to my first class and struggling through the whole workout. I felt pretty confident I would either vomit or die.

Well, guess what happened? I did vomit, but I didn’t die!

I met an amazing group of people who were also on a journey.  I had nothing to be scared of or intimidated by. Every one of them was on the way to becoming healthier and better than they were yesterday.

Step Three – Food and Supplementation

What an eye opening experience this was! Learning how to really read labels and realizing that I had been consuming some of the most processed, unhealthy foods that the local grocer had to offer.  I added missing supplements to my daily regimen such as multi-vitamins and whey isolate protein. This made amazing differences in my energy levels and muscle recovery after workouts. It also boosted my metabolism. The results that diet, exercise, and supplementation have made for me have been staggering.

fitness transformation

Every day, I’m learning more and I’m better than I was yesterday.

The results so far, from this journey, body fat went from 36.5% to 17.8%, muscle 28.3% to 37% and my body age went from 44 to 28, visceral fat 6 to a 4.

I fit in clothing sizes that I fit in my early twenties.  I’m digging these results and the journey has just begun! I went from struggling with five-pound dumbbells a little over three years ago to running several half marathons, lifting six days a week, one boot camp a week, one personal training session and two cross fit workouts a week… ten exhausting workouts a week.

So what I’m saying is: it’s time!

GHeidi fitness journey ive me an excuse not to. You don’t have the time? You have to make the time! Several of my workouts are completed before or after a day of being both boss and Mommy. You don’t have to go to a fancy gym either to make it happen; you can do this in the comfort of your own home.

If you want the change, you have to commit.

Are you ready to be better than what you were yesterday? Of course you are! And the journey, my friend, gets pretty exciting. You will accomplish things that you could never imagine.  I’m so excited for you to get started.

We are all in this journey together.  Next time we’ll touch on some workouts that will get the metabolism fired up, clean eating and some great supplements to consider adding to your daily regimen.
