The Latest & Greatest Trend: Couple Workouts
“Couples who sweat together, stay together,” or so the saying goes. While it is, of course, always a good idea for you and your sweetie to have independent hobbies and time apart, working out together might just help bring you closer, and will almost certainly help you more effectively reach your fitness goals.
The latest trend in couple workouts is being touted as upping your physical fitness while improving your romantic relationship, all at the same time. Who’s going to say no to that? And don’t take my word for it, check out the studies:
A 2000 study found that exercise (which they defined as a “novel and arousing task”) left couples feeling more satisfied with their relationship and more in love.
A 2000 study found that exercise left couples feeling more satisfied with their relationship and more in love.
Another study concluded that exercising with a partner helps you to feel more competent, increases your performance and boosts your mood.
Last (but certainly not least), this study shows that your partner is more likely to fall in love with you when they see your competence and willingness to take risks in a physical fitness scenario. In fact, exercise can actually induce symptoms identical to physiological arousal.
Some of Our Favorite Exercises
Not only will you be sharing a new and fun experience with your partner, but couple workouts are highly likely to increase your energy output (burn more calories) and take your fitness to the next level. Try these some of our favorite moves to get started:
Partner Leg Extensions
While this one might take some finagling to get comfortable, it is a serious leg workout for the partner on the ground. And remember ladies, you also have impressive muscle power in your legs, so don’t be afraid to give this one a try.
Partner Plank Crawl & Burpee Jump
Whether in the gym or out enjoying the sunshine (even better), this move works your muscles and gets your heart rate up. Plank position is one of the best core exercises available (make sure not to let your low back sag down and keep your abs tight), and the crawl is surprisingly challenging for most people. This one will definitely bring you and your partner closer, in all senses of the word.
These same awesome ladies offer another fun and effective partner exercise (in fact, check out the whole video for a complete workout routine). Burpees are one of the best total body moves, as they build muscle strength, increase endurance, and are pretty much a great addition to any workout. Add a lateral jump (like you see in this video), and you’ll be burning some serious calories.
Wall Sit With a Push-Up
The old school wall-sit exercise is tried and true, and is excellent for building your isometric strength in the glutes, quads, and calves. A push-up (also a classic) is one of the best total body exercises, and especially targets your core and arm muscles. This partner move is also sure to get your heart rate going (and the view isn’t bad, either).
There you have it! Mix and match these moves, and/or find some of your own favorites. Switch up your solo workout routine for a couple workout, and reap the benefits of not only increased fitness, but an increased emotional bond. Working out with your partner can be both a fun way to connect, and you’ll be sure to challenge yourself (and each other) in new ways.
